Trump, Denial, and Dangerous Climate Change

The picture of the dunce cap above is intentional and means what it implies. Here is another picture that we think will characterize the impacts of climate change under the Trump administration's dangerous and ignorant anti-climate-action policies:

Without once mentioning the myriad harmful effects that climate change is increasingly visiting on the world including the U.S., minimizing the enormous potential economic benefits of the upcoming renewable energy transition, and looking backward to coal, Trump announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. He specified that neither the U.S. Nationally Determined Contribution nor contributions to the Green Climate Fund would be upheld. He did not specify the legal modalities of withdrawal, which vary between one and three yearsTrump did say that Paris or another agreement more favorable to the U.S. could be (re)negotiated. More information on the Paris Agreement can be found HERE.

Trump's anti-climate actions, which include attacks on the EPA, NASA and NOAA, follow the extreme right-wing climate contrarians/deniers

Trump's actions abdicate the moral and ethical responsibility of mitigating climate change that hit the vulnerable the worst, and violate intergenerational equity by condemning our descendants to increasing probability of an unlivable planet.

If he continues, his legacy will be viewed as a climate criminal.

What can we do? We have no choice. We must redouble our efforts on climate risk management by supporting renewable energies, supporting cities and states to adopt mitigation programs, writing letters to the media, contacting our representatives to adopt climate action, and protesting.

Begin again today.

Climate Portal Statement on Trump's Climate Executive Order

Trump's climate executive order issued 3/28/17 is dangerous. This order if carried out will threaten the health and well-being not only of the poor, but of all of us. This order threatens to make life more dangerous for our grandchildren. This order opposes a viable economic future with renewables and looks backwards to yesterday's economy of fossil fuels. This order violates U.S. climate commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement and will encourage other recalcitrant countries to oppose their commitments. This order could produce dangerous economic and financial instabilities, and is bad for jobs and business. This order ignores real climate science and relies on mavericks and charlatans who push contrarian/denier pseudo science. This order aims at an increase political instability and terrorism, dangerously threatening national security. This order if carried out will exacerbate the worst of climate impacts. There will be no place to hide

Let's oppose this dangerous order, with loud continuous political action. Call your representative and senators.

There is still no choice but optimism. We have to keep going. We can succeed and we will succeed. What will our legacy be? You can help.

Trump's proposed climate budget cuts to the EPA, NASA and NOAA cut climate science and climate action programs. This threatens us and our grandchildren.

Please call your representative/senators - urge "Hands off the EPA, NASA, and NOAA budgets". We only have a short time to stop Trump from shooting the climate science messenger and shutting down federal climate action.

Please post widely.

  • Christine Todd Whitman: How Not to Run the E.P.A.

"...On the other [red-team] side is a tiny minority of contrarians who publish very little by comparison, are rarely cited in the scientific literature and are often funded by fossil fuel interests, and whose books are published, most often, by special interest groups... If this project goes forward, it should be treated for what it is: a shameful attempt to confuse the public into accepting the false premise that there is no need to regulate fossil fuels."

  • Message from inside the EPA - information suppression by the Trump regime

From an EPA staffer:
"So I work at the EPA and yeah it's as bad as you are hearing:
The entire agency is under lockdown, the website, facebook, twitter, you name it is static and can't be updated. All reports, findings, permits and studies are frozen and not to be released. No presentations or meetings with outside groups are to be scheduled.
Any Press contacting us are to be directed to the Press Office which is also silenced and will give no response.
All grants and contracts are frozen from the contractors working on Superfund sites to grad school students working on their thesis.
We are still doing our work, writing reports, doing cancer modeling for pesticides hoping that this is temporary and we will be able to serve the public soon. But many of us are worried about an ideologically-fueled purging and if you use any federal data I advise you gather what you can now.
We have been told the website is being reworked to reflect the new administration's policy.
Feel free to copy and paste, you all pay for the government and you should know what's going on. I am posting this as a fellow citizen and not in any sort of official capacity."

Climate Portal Statement on Trump and the U. S. Elections 2016

Climate action is multifaceted. Trump can slow some of it but he cannot kill it.

Trump cannot cancel the Paris Agreement. Probably he will try to sabotage it. U.S. national climate action (e.g. the EPA) will be hit hard in the short run. Climate anti-science contrarian/deniers will be appointed, and science will suffer.

The states (CA NY ...) and cities responsible for most CO2 will continue to act. Business will continue to wake up to climate risk. People will continue to put solar panels on their roofs.

The old Confederacy, Midwest farmers and Rust Belt supporters for Trump will be hit harder and harder by extreme weather. Eventually all will reject the climate contrarian "hoax" lie.

There is still no choice but optimism. We have to keep going. You can help.
