 DATA DATA DATA

Here is a summary of important data related to global warming / climate change.

---------------

1. Global average temperature data since 1880  from GISS NASA and from BEST.

Note that the global average temperature since around 1975 has a definite upward trend. This is the definition of recent global warming. Fluctuations around this upward global warming trend are also present. In particular, 1998 had a high temperature due to a huge El Nino heating effect superimposed on the global warming trend. El Nino which heats the earth (and its counterpart La Nina which cools the earth) produce fluctuations that obscure but do not hide the upward trend due to man-made global warming. The GISS/NASA data have 2010 tied with 2005 as the hottest year. 2009 is next tied with 1998 and several other years. The BEST (Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature) data graph also has the greenhouse gas forcing plotted overlay. The correlation is very high and the physical mechanism is clear. Recently it appears that the deep oceans have been absorbing an extra amount of heat, disguising some of the global warming signal.

2. Reconstructions over the last 1,300 years (Northern Hemisphere): "Hockey Stick".

Note that, contrary to contrarian claims, there was NO pronounced global "medieval warming period". Temperatures today are higher than any time in the past 1,300 years, including medieval times.

3. Carbon Dioxide (top pic) and other greenhouse gases over the last ten thousand years

The huge spike in CO2 is man-made, is responsible for the upward global warming trend in the last 30 years, and will lead to much worse global warming in the future. Other greenhouse gases contribute. If substantial release of methane in the permafrost is triggered, global warming will become even far worse. Graphic is from the 2007 IPCC Science Report.

Misuse of data by Science Deniers

It's not the Sun

Climate science deniers routinely and fallaciously claim that solar activity is correlated with recent climate. This graph shows that since the recent global warming trend started around 1975 the sun has NOT been heating up. Here are the data:

There is no Pause in Global Heating of the Planet

Science deniers only focus on a minute fraction of the data that suits their purpose. From ClimateNexus.

Deniers distort the Satellite Data

Global Climate Observing System

The vision of Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is for all users to have access to the climate observations, data records and information they need to address pressing climate-related concerns. GCOS users include individuals, national and international organizations, institutions and agencies. GCOS works with partners to ensure the sustained provision of reliable physical, chemical and biological observations and data records for the total climate system – across the atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial domains, including hydrological and carbon cycles and the cryosphere.

The Contrarians? Full article with references Last Updated on 2017-10-28 23:11:08   Climate Contrarians AKA climate science deniers or climate "faux" skeptics spread disinformation about climate and try to prevent responsible climate risk management. What do contrarians Say about global warming? [The "Four Fallacy Trenches"] What about Real Scientific Skepticism and contrarians? What are some Contrarian Tactics and Fallacies? What about "fringe" contrarian ideas? Aren't there some contrarians with credentials who disproved mainstream climate science? Global Warming has NOT stopped Last Updated on 2014-02-03 10:33:46 GLOBAL WARMING HAS NOT STOPPED! The fallacy "global warming has stopped" starts with a cherry-picked unusually high surface atmosphere temperature point in 1998 that resulted from a huge "El Niño", which basically transferred a lot of heat out of the ocean to the atmosphere. Following 1998, La Niña dominated, which transferred heat from the atmosphere into the ocean (and lately into the deep ocean). Looking only at the atmosphere and neglecting the heat transfer in and out of the ocean leads to the fallacy. The total warming of the planet (ocean + atmosphere) has been trending upwards. If the El Niño/La Niña noise is subtracted out, or if the Arctic region is included, the global warming trend in the surface atmosphere is clear (as shown below). The scientific consensus is that with careful analysis there has been no pause in global... More »

New Scientific Paper Rebuts Contrarian Cloud Claims Last Updated on 2011-09-06 00:00:00   New Scientific Paper Rebuts Contrarian Cloud Claims Video Press Release Background Information Published Paper Other posts Video HERE: PRESS RELEASE Clouds only amplify climate change, says a Texas A&M University professor in a study that rebuts recent claims that clouds are actually the root cause of climate change.     Andrew Dessler, a Texas A&M atmospheric sciences professor considered one of the nation’s experts on climate variations, says years of data support the mainstream and long-held view that clouds are primarily acting as a so-called feedback that amplifies warming from human activity.  His work is published today in the American Geophysical Union’s peer-reveiwed journal Geophysical Research Letters.   ...
