Animals and Climate Change

BEES

It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees, especially the domesticated European honey bee.

Bees are being hit hard by climate change, extreme weather, and pesticides. Here are some examples:

Species Extinction and Climate Change

Many species (animals and plants) will become extinct.  HERE is a summary and HERE is a great video. An article on University of Exeter research gives the estimate that one in 10 species could face extinction by the year 2100 if current climate change impacts continue.

Terry Root Interview: "When I started in this field 25 years ago, I really believed that we could stop mass extinction from occurring. I'm now to the place where I see we're on the trajectory that mass extinction will occur. We're going to lose half the species on the planet. It will be very hard not to lose half the species on the planet," said Root. Dr. Terry Root is a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, and Professor, by courtesy, in the department of Biology. HERE is a video with Terry Root discussing the effect of climate change and global warming during an interview with Humanities Center Director Steve Shankman, at the University of Oregon in 2008:

HERE is a 2003 paper by Terry Root et al. that says "The synergism of rapid temperature rise and other stresses, in particular habitat destruction, could easily disrupt the connectedness among species and lead to a reformulation of species communities, reflecting differential changes in species, and to numerous extirpations and possibly extinctions."

Ecology and Climate Change

Jul 15, 2009 ... As species are pressured and exterminated by shifting climate zones, ecosystems can collapse, destroying more species.

This shows climate change impacts at a state level. ----------- Environment New Jersey:          Solar Rising: Report Ranks New Jersey Fourth in the Nation in Solar Power September 27, 2013 9:58 AM Environment New Jersey Research & Policy Center released Lighting the Way: What We Can Learn from America’s Top 12 Solar States, a new report highlighting a solar energy boom across the country. The report ranks New Jersey 4rd in the nation per capita for solar installations. Although this makes New Jersey one of a dozen states that have led the nation in solar energy with supportive policies, we have slipped from first in the country. Last year, solar capacity in New Jersey grew by 43%, bringing it to a total of 971 Megawatts.   Lighting the Way: What We Can Learn from America's Top 12... More »
