Right-wing climate contrarian media - as usual - distort the science

Here is a good scientific analysis of a real scientific paper:

Is there really still a chance for staying below 1.5 °C global warming?

Here is a statement by the papers' authors complaining about contrarian media misinterpreting the paper:

Here is an explanation of the paper:

CONTRARIAN PSUEDO-SCIENCE

NOTABLE SATELLITE DATA FACT

"Satellites measure the temperature of the lower troposphere and capture average temperature changes around 5km above the surface. This region tends to be influenced more strongly by El Niño and La Niña events than the surface and satellite records show correspondingly larger warming or cooling spikes during these events. This is why, for example, 1998 shows up as one of the warmest years in satellites, but not in surface records."

BUT 5 KM ALTITUDE (3 miles high) IS WHERE AIRPLANES FLY. MOST PEOPLE DON'T LIVE AT THOSE ALTITUDES. Satellite data - analyzed by one particular institution - are used by contrarians to argue 'no global warming' has occurred. They are wrong. This is just one example, though notable, of contrarian pseudo-science. Here is a list of contrarian pseudo-scientific fallacies with responses.

Where can I get More Information on Contrarians/Deniers?

There are many references and links to get reliable information on contrarians. A great resource is RealClimate's Wiki, which is “an index for debunking of various popular media occurrences of climate-related nonsense”.  HERE is the list of responses to common contrarian arguments at RealClimate. RealClimate is the go-to scientifically accurate website run by professional climatologists. A good summary of climate change denial on Wikipedia is HERE.

Other excellent sites debunking contrarians include Coby Beck’s How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic and Skeptical Science; these have organized lists of contrarian arguments and responses, and HERE is the Skeptical Science iphone app. More useful information refuting contrarian claims is at the UK Met Office, the Union of Concerned Scientists, DeltoiddeSmogBlog (which has a LIST of contrarians with background information), Grist, Prof. Stephen Schneider's websiteNERCEDFIsland of Doubt, Climate Science Watch, and Climate Progress.

They rebuttals are not intended to be complete, but simply to enable the respondent to "bat the ball back over the net" in an informal encounter with someone quoting a contrarian claim. As described HERE, most of these one-liners were written by Dr. Jan Dash, Director of the UU-UNO Climate Initiative, with some editing by John Cook, author of Skeptical Science. Details on the science at Skeptical Science are obtained by clicking on the one-line responses.  ----------------------- In THIS document of some historical interest (online HERE), the first line in a response labeled JWD is the one-liner summarizing the science by Jan Dash.
