The effects of more prolonged droughts resulting from climate change come at a time when the world's groundwater supplies are also under pressure, from increased agricultural demand for irrigation. A study by the University of California Center for Hydrologic Modeling, presented at the December 6, 2011 meeting of the American Geophysical Union, found that "groundwater is being depleted at a rapid clip in virtually all of the major aquifers in the world's arid and semiarid regions."
